3 Photography Goals For The New Year

Can you even believe it's January? I think the answer is yes...we all can. Even though a new year doesn't fix everything, I think it's safe to say we are all welcoming a fresh start. Perhaps your daily movement goals changed in 2020, or your productivity plateaued; whatever your circumstances may be, the newness of the year can bring hope and motivation.

As a portrait photographer, I am lucky to say I was able to safely grow my business and serve my clients last year. And I am expectant and excited to see more growth in 2021. Here are three goals I have for my business in the coming year.

1. Print, Archive, and Organize Photos More Efficiently-

How many photos do you have right now in your camera roll? I had about 80,000 images, just waiting to be lost tragically, until recently when I began backing them up to an online storage service. But what do we really do with those photos? Do I really need thousands of memes backed up forever? This year, I plan to be more intentional with how I manage my images and what I do with them in the long run. This goes for iPhone photos and DSLR photos. Bring on the photo books and Smallwoods framed art!

2. Take More "Ugly" Photos-

Wow, what a great photographer goal. 🥴 But within my home and in my day-to-day life, I want to photograph more real raw moments. Messes. Bad light. Mismatched toddler. I want to master my craft to the point of these ugly moments becoming art. Which also means leaving the camera out of the bag and using it more frequently. In the same light, I want to capture your messes too. iPhone pics serve a purpose, but wouldn't you love an album of photos to show your kids one day of how their childhood looked from a professional photographer? I know I do.

3. More Black and Whites-

This is 100% preference. I know today's social media standard is to have colorful, cohesive vibes through and through, but what if you love a good black and white occasionally? So Instagram feed, be damned. Bring on the timeless black and whites.

*BONUS* Goal-

READ MORE! I'm already off to a great start and looking forward to diving into the Bible more and reading some new stories too. The first book I devoured this year was The Return by Nicholas Sparks. It took me for a ride with unexpected plot twists and an ending that that shocked and amazed. Anyways, hope I didn't just spoil it...it was good. Come back next week to read about the 5 best photo locations in Colorado Springs!
