As I drove to this session across town, the song Helluva Life by Frankie Ballard came on my playlist. It was never a favorite or anything special, but boy did it bring back the memories. I remember listening to it in 2012 when Ryan was finishing his freshman year at the Academy. I remember counting down the days, hours, and minutes until he would be graduated and we could get married. That song brought me back to those amazing hellos at the airport and the gut-wrenching goodbyes in my driveway.
Even after living in Colorado Springs for three and a half-ish years, driving up north by USAFA brings back the most amazing memories. I certainly didn't enjoy it while he was there, and I was in Florida. But I really don't regret those feelings. USAFA was a stepping stone to the greatest times of our lives. When the Thunderbirds flew overhead and he was dismissed as a cadet and recognized as a lieutenant, our lives became so much better. I try to remind myself daily that I am living my dream.
So as I prepped myself for this session, the USAFA memories were perfectly acceptable. Getting to photograph this couple, about to embark on the greatest journey they'll ever know; I couldn't help but be joyful. The time certainly seems to fly, but that's the beauty of this life. Caitlin and Michael were so refreshing because our stories are so similar. Dating for six years before getting to tie the knot, coming from the South and freezing in the Colorado snow, and so eager for the exciting new chapter. Also, their dog was low-key the cutest little (big) adventurer I've ever seen.
